Smart and Skilled: A NSW Government funding program

Smart and Skilled is a reform of the NSW Vocational Education and Training system. Under Smart and Skilled the NSW Government contributes to the cost of each course with the student paying the balance.
If you answered yes to these five questions, then you are eligible for Smart and Skilled Funding.
15 years old or over, and
no longer at school, and
living or working in NSW (or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person living in specific NSW border areas), and
an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen.
the holder of a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) or an applicant for one.

NSW Fee Free Training

The Semester 1, 2026 NSW Fee Free places are now open for enrolments. There are limited places available https://education.nsw.gov.au/skills-nsw/search-for-training-courses/nsw-fee-free
NSW Fee Free and NSW Fee Free Construction improves access to training, including for young people, job seekers, First Nations People, unpaid carers, women undertaking study in non-traditional trades and certain categories of visa holders.
It does this by offering:
courses that support priority industries, fee free
the priority courses through Smart and Skilled contracted training providers, including Adult and Community Education providers.
Access to NSW Fee Free places is limited and is subject to:
availability of NSW Fee Free or NSW Fee Free Construction places
commencing training in a NSW Fee Free or NSW Fee Free Construction priority course, where places are available
meeting the student eligibility requirements.

Who is Eligible

People who meet Smart and Skilled eligibility criteria and are undertaking a NSW Fee Free priority course may be eligible for a fee free place. The Smart and Skilled eligibility criteria:
15 years old or over
no longer at school
living or working in NSW
an Australian citizen, permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder, or New Zealand citizen.
the holder of a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) or an applicant for one.
